What is MPG?

So, what does MPG mean exactly? MPG (also known as miles per gallon) is a measurement of how far you can travel in miles on a gallon of fuel. The higher the MPG, the better the vehicle’s fuel economy. 

MPG Ratings

When it comes to MPG ratings, the EPA, or Environmental Protection Agency, is the government entity that’s responsible for certifying and classifying a vehicle’s MPG. When running these tests, factors like road conditions and traffic congestion can impact MPG results. To help compensate for this, the EPA runs tests on various different driving courses, averages the scores, and assigns ratings based on three different categories:

• City MPG: Due to traffic, stoplights, and stop signs, city drivers have to start and stop more, which increases their fuel consumption. 
• Highway MPG: Rural and highway drivers can often travel long distances without stopping, which decreases their fuel consumption overall. 
• Combined MPG: This combines both city and highway MPG ratings to reflect the reality of drivers who do both. 

What is a Good MPG?

First off, it’s important to know that MPG ratings will often differ between different types of vehicles. For example, what’s fuel-efficient for a truck can be different than what’s fuel-efficient for a coupe. That said, today you generally want a vehicle with a combined MPG rating of 23 MPG in order to get a good MPG.
