Rotating tires

Many Russel Springs, KY drivers aren’t aware of how to do a tire rotation themselves, but Don Franklin Auto in Lexington can help you with that! Learn why it is important to rotate car tires and how to rotate tires properly. As you cruise those Somerset, KY streets and experience different terrains, learning how to rotate tires is vital. Read on to learn the correct way on how to do a tire rotation with our service department

Why is it Important to Rotate Car Tires?

Since road conditions and driving habits vary throughout Louisville, KY, not all of your tires will wear evenly. As your tires experience impact, the outside edges of your front tire will experience greater wear when you turn while your rear tires will wear more evenly. If you choose not to rotate car tires, you will see a different rate in tire wear and have to replace them quicker.

Tire Rotation Details

  • FWD Tires: When you rotate car tires, you move the front tires to the back on the same sides, then you will move the rear tires to the front but switch sides.
  • RWD Tires: It is the opposite for RWD vehicles. Your front tires will switch sides when moved to the rear.

How to do a Tire Rotation at Home

Learning how to rotate tires is pretty simple once you have all the tools. Before you learn how to do a tire rotation, you will need a set of car jacks, lug nut wrench, and a singular car jack; then follow these easy steps:

  1. Engage your parking brake as a safety precaution.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on all four wheels, but don’t take them all the way off. This step makes unscrewing them when the tire is elevated much easier.
  3. Lift up one wheel with a car jack and place the jack stand underneath it.
  4. Remove the tires one by one.
  5. Make sure your tires meet optimal tire pressure. Rotate them in the correct pattern type for your tires. Put the tire on the wheel mount, screw the lug nuts on by hand, then make sure they’re tight enough.
  6. Lower the jack stands then use the lug wrench to finish the lug nut tightening. Adjust the lugnuts diagonally from one another for even tightening.
